Guideline Technical Specifications
Scope of Work: These technical specification guidelines are directed
towards construction of individual sewage disposal systems. All
building sewer installations as designed shall meet the 1972 revised
Colorado Technical plumbing code. The disposal system can be located
to suit individual dwelling locations and shall meet the requirements
of the county regulations.
Septic Tank
General: The septic tank shall have a minimum of two.(2) compartments
with two (2) twenty (20) inch diameter access holes or manholes, one
each located in inlet and outlet chambers. The size and shape may
vary, however minimum dimensions and capacities shown in the drawing
and as specified by county regulations shall be met. The invert of
the inlet shall be at least three (3) inches above the invert of the
outlet. A baffle or tee shall be provided to divert the influent
downward and shall penetrate at least six (6) inches below the liquid
level and at a level not below that allowed for the outlet device. The
outlet shall have a baffle or tee extending to a minimum of fourteen
(14) inches below the invert of the outlet invert and one (1) inch
below the tank cover. The outlet shall be distinctly marked on the
exterior of the tank. No septic tank shall be located within the
horizontal distances from the various facilities listed below and
on the drawing.
50 feet from springs, wells or suction lines
10 feet from potable water supply line, dwelling, property lines,
dry gulches
50 feet from cistern, lakes, water course or stream
-2-
Material/Construction: The septic tank shall be constructed of water
tight material. Precast reinforced concrete septic tanks are acceptable
by the county. However, metal or coated metal tanks are not acceptable.
Cement for a concrete tank shall be Portland Type II, sulfate resistant.
The tank shall be reinforced with welded wire mesh of not less than 10
gauge with 6" x 6" spacing or heavier. The walls and floor of the tank
shall be a minimum of four (4) inches thick. The top cover of the
tank shall also be four (4) inches thick minimum and reinforced in
the same manner, and including #4 rebar eight (8) inches from each side
and thirty (30) inches crossways from each end as well as on inside
of the access holes.
Installation: The tank shall be installed on a solid base and must
be level. The finished grade shall be within twelve (12) inches from
the manholes. Roof drains, surface and subsurface drains or cistern
overflows can not be diverted into the tank or around any part of the
disposal system. The discharge line from the building sewer to the
septic tank shall be laid to a grade as shown in the drawing.: Sewer
pipe connections to and from the septic tank shall be of cast iron
and bends shall be limited to 450 ells or longsweep quarterbends. The
inlet and outlet shall be grouted and sealed with waterproof material.
Backfilling around a septic tank must be conducted in a manner to
prevent any settlement and avoid undue strain on the tank and the pipes
entering and leaving the tank.
-3-
Distribution Box
General: The distribution box is installed to collect liquid effluent
from the septic tank and to distribute it evenly into the next phase
of the disposal systems. The distribution box shall have one (1)
inlet and seven (7) outlets. All outlet inverts shall be at the same
level and at least one (1) inch below the invert of the inlet and
three (3) inches to six (6) inches above the floor of the box.
Material: A precast, reinforced, concrete box will be acceptable.
Cement for the concrete shall be Type II Portland, sulfate resistant.
Reinforcement shall be 10 gauge 6" x 6" welded wire mesh or heavier.
Concrete shall achieve a 28 day strength of 3000 psi.
Installation: The distribution box shall be installed on solid ground
and must be level. Backfill around the box shall be carried out in a
manner to prevent box misalignment and eliminate any voids. Granular
backfilling under the box is recommended.
Evapo-transpiration (E.T.) Bed With or Without Subsurface Sand Filters
General: The effluent from a septic tank is collected into a distri-
bution box and discharged into an E.T. bed through four (4) inch diameter
perforated PVC lines or into the subsurface sand filter and finally
carried into an E.T. bed as shown in the drawing. In case of a disposal
system through subsurface sand filtration, an additional distribution
box is required. Construction of the evapo-transpiration system shall
be performed as per the drawings and specifications herein. Evapo-
transpiration and.subsurface sand filter beds shall not be located
within the distances from various facilities as listed below and on
the drawings.

perpendicular to general slope of the ground. Twelve (12) inches of
washed gravel, 3/4" to 2 1/2", shall be placed in the excavation and
distribution lines shall be laid to a slope as shown in the drawing.
All pipes must be covered with gravel to a depth of at least four (4)
inches. The remainder of the excavation shall be filled with fine
grained soils and capped with top soil. The finished grade shall be
crowned to eliminate infiltration of surface runoff into the bed. Four
(4) inch PVC air vent pipes shall be placed vertically and must extend
six (6) inches above finished grade. Each vent will be capped, with
air vent holes in the surface extension. The subsurface sand filter
bed, where applicable, shall be uniform, coarse, clean and shall have

Gravel for the sand filter bed shall pass through a 2 1/2" sieve and
retained on a 3/4" sieve. Prior to laying distribution lines, the
sand shall be thoroughly flooded and settled. Four (4) inch PVC
perforated distribution lines shall be laid to a grade shown in the
drawing and be capped at the ends.
Vegetation
To provide favorable transpiration, after the topsoil is placed and
finished, seeding and mulching shall be done over the finished grade.
Seeding shall be of a meadow grass or lucern grass although rye or wheat
will be acceptable.
