Subject- Observation of Excavation and Additional percolation Testing, Proposed
Cabin, 80 Acre Parcel Near E¢le-Thonaasville Road, Eagle County,
Colorado.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Earhart:
As requested by Caroline Seelbindev with RCS Construction, a .representative of
Hepworth-Pawlak Geotech ical, Inc. observed the excavations on Tune 21, 2000 and
conducted additional percolation testing at the subject site to evaluate the soils exposed
for foundation support and the feasibility of an infiltration septic disposal system. The
results of our work are presented In this report. Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc.
previously conducted a subsoil study and percolation testing at the subject site and
presented our findings in a report elated August 27, 1999. The additional testing was
performed in accordance with our agreement for professio.aal services to you dated June
15, 2000,
The proposed cabin will be a single story wood frame structure with a left. Ground
floor will be structural over a crawlspace. .An allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf
was used in the design based on the previous subsoil study.
At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cur in one level
from 3 to 4 feet below the ground Surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the
excavation consisted of sandy clay with fragments of shale up to cobble sive. The upper
6 inches of the soil in the bottom of the excavation was very moist and soft due to
recent precipitation. We reconnnended. to Ray Seelbinder with RCS Construction that
the softened Soils and mud be removed to undisturbed natural soils prior to the
placement of concrete,
The soil conditions exposed W the excavation are consistent with, those previously
encountered on, the site and suitable %ir support of spread footings designed for the
recommended allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. Other rmorn menda.tions
presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed,
A profile pit and two shallow backhoe pits had been excavated at the locations shown on
Fig. 1. Percolation test Males had beela dug and snaked in tle bottom of the backhoe
pits prior to our testing_ Fercol.ation test hale P-b was hand dug; and soaked on June 21,
2000. The soils exposed in the percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the

profile pit and consist of about 21h feet of topsail overlying medium stiff to stiff sandy
clay with shale fragments to the profile pit depth of g feet. Groundwater was not
observed in the profile pit and. the soils were slightly moist to moist -
Percolation tests were performed on June 21 and. 22 by a representative of Hepworth.-
Pawlak Geoteclmical, -Inc. The percolation test results are presented on Table I. The
percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate between 15 and 18 minutes per inch
with an average of 16 minutes per inch. Based on the subsurface conditions observed
and the percolation test results, the tested area should be suitable for a conventional
infiltration septic disposal system.
If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely, I ; l (a

Note: Percolation test holes P-4 and P-5 were hand dug in the boti4m of backhoe pits and
soaked by the Client prior to our test. Test bole P-6 was hand drag and soaked on June
21, 2000. The percolation tests were conducted on June 21 and 22, 2000. The average
percolation rates were based on the last three readings of each test.
