HomeMy WebLinkAboutR1938-05 Ute Indian Reservation - Indian Land OwnershipR_SOLUTIOR WHEREAS, Under the provisions of the Congressional act passed and approved June 18, 1934 (Section 3, 48 Stat. 984, and 25 U. S. C. 463), the Secretary of the Interior is autho- rized to restore to Indian ownership certain ceded lands within the Ute Indian Reservation, when found to be in the public in- terest to do so; and, WHEREAS, a large part of the public domain of Sa County is ineluC,ed in the old Ute Indian Reservation, anc e Public domain lands in said county are subject to the provisions of said act, or it is at least claimed that the same are subject to the provisions of said act; and, WHEREAS, the livestock industry of said �� County is one of the most important industries, an ax structure of said county would be seriously jeopardized by any administrative action vhich might dislocate or interfere with said industry; and, 5- ' A , the restoration of public domain lands within said County to the ownership of the Indians wcaid be o Seri s concern to this county and its inhabitants, and it would be contrary to the public interest to have such restoratioL made; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED That the Secretary of the Interior be urgently requested to make a full and complete in- vestigation and allow the citizens anc'. inhabitants of each n.roa in which a proposed withdrawal is to be made, ample notice of the proposed withdrawal before the same becomes effective, with an opportunity to protest at public meetings or othorwise. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That this board convey to said Secretary of the Interior its concern over the proposed restor^- tion to Indian ownership of said cedes: Indian lands, d this resolution be and the same is hereby made an cxpre an(6sitoh hat of the deliberate judgment of this board that the restoration of said lands would be a serious blow to the existing industries of this county and that the same is not in the public interest. be forwarded ttothe Secretary ofathe Interi rtand tosoachlof our United States Senators and Con.,ressmon, and that they and each of them be urged to protest any such restoration anc. take such action as may be necessary to prevent the same.
