Amount of Request: $3900.00
Eagle County Adult Services promotes healthy choices for independence by sponsoring
Health and WeIlness activities and events throughout the year. The Senior Health Fair
was held in March 2006 at the Eagle County Ambulance District in Edwards. Over 75
seniors participated in a variety of health assessments including foot care, hearing, vision,
blood pressure and osteoporosis detection. Plans are underway for Health and Fitness
events scheduled for June 2006, at the three Eagle County Senior Sites (Eagle, Minturn
and Basalt). Each of the sites conducts year-round, individualized weUness programs
using local resources and organizations. Our programs follow best practice models and
are proven to attract senior participation.
Senior WeIlness programs target older adults (over age 60) and their care-giving family
members. Physical activities such as Yoga and Pilates increase balance, flexibility, and
oxygen intake; foster positive self-image; enhance the individual's manual dexterity and
hand-eye coordination: and reduce stress. Additionally, our Health and Wellness
programs often provide an entree for older adults and their family members to access
existing services and programs provided by Eagle County Adult services.

PART II APPLICATION FOR PROGRA~I FUNDING
1. Describe the program to be funded
Eagle County Adult Services is the designated agency for services under the Older
Americans Act. A crucial aspect of programming is health and wellness services and
promotion. Funding is requested to support health and wellness programs at two Senior
Sites in Eagle and Minturn.
The need for continued funding was re-determined by the Wellness Committee which
reviews the effectiveness of Adult Services Health and Wellness programming. This
request will continue to fund on-going Health and Wellness activities such as low impact
aerobics, nutrition discussions and consultations, foot care clinics, yoga, pilates and
horticulture therapy. Additionally, this grant will help to promote our Active Minds
Initiative; a seminar series that will be stimulating, enriching, thought-provoking, positive
and fun. It is steeped in the premise of life long learning and honors the wisdom of older
adults. As an active mind is a healthy mind, this initiative will combat social isolation,
enrich lives and attract new participants.
2. Eagle County Residents Served
Per the Eagle County Adult Services 2006 objectives, Adult Services expects to provide
health and wellness services to 200 unduplicated older adults. Demographics statistics
provided by the State of Colorado's Website indicate continuing growth of the over 60
age group in Eagle County: 3757 in 2006, increasing to 6185 by 2010. A consequence of
this continued growth is an increase in the number of familial care providers who could
also be served by wellness programs. Historically, senior weUness programs are well
attended by a diverse group of older adults.

4. Staffing
Eagle County Adult Services organizes all Senior Health and WeUness Activities and
Events utilizing the talents of our staff Coordination, transportation and physical therapy
positions are staffed from within. Adult services makes use of RSVP volunteers and
complements programs with contracted services from area hospitals and service
organizations such as Health Rhythmus, Alpine Area on Aging, and Eagle County Health
and Human Services.
5. Budget
Eagle County's Adult Services Health and Wellness Initiative has an annual budget of
just over 6000, which includes County Government support and donations made to the
Eagle County Council on Aging from citizens and private organizations (70 percent
County contributions and 30 percent donations). This funding supports existing programs
and annual wellness events in Eagle and Minturn.
6. Measuring Success
Qualification and measurements of success will be consistent with the report
requirements of the Alpine Area Agencies on Aging. AAAA Reports require total units
of service, unduplicated units of service, minority units of service, and low income units
of service. Reports also include units of service to family care providers, which is an
important outreach component to Eagle County's Health and Wellness Initiative.

7. Funding Alternatives
Continued United Way funding will enable existing programs to remain intact and viable.
Core funding for staff is provided through other funding sources, including County
subsidy. This funding also allows Adult Services to provide scholarship subsidies for low
. .
lficome semors.
8. Additional Information: Benefits
Health and Wellness Programming provides numerous benefits for older adults and their
family care providers. For example, Pilates serves aging bodies by improving flexibility
and mobility, and also strengthens bones. This lessens the risk offalls, increases
confidence, decreases stress and promotes independent living. Horticulture therapy, in
particular, alleviates stress and has been shown to improve concentration, manual
dexterity and eye-hand coordination by providing small objects that require precise
movements of the hands and attention to tactile perception. Health seminars for older
adults provide information on leading healthy lifestyles by promoting the importance of
lifestyle change and providing alternatives to long established habits.
PART III OVERVIEW of LAST YEAR'S PROGRAM
Adult Services has four broad objectives for the year 2006.
. Achieve Well Being and Independent Living for Seniors and Disabled Adults
. Strengthen Family Life
. Improve Community Health Status
. Improve Quality of Community Life
.
The Adult Services Health and Wellness program contributed to the success of meeting
the above objectives. Adult Services programming endeavors to create healthy, well
informed older adults which is in accordance with the federal and state directives under
the Older Americans Act. Program development is fluid; adapting to senior needs and
concerns.
The goals of the 2006 grant were met by introducing alternative health and weUness
programs to older adults in Eagle and Minturn. Pilates, tap dancing, chair aerobics and
horticulture programs were effective in attracting participants who would normally only
attend the nutrition program and who had no prior knowledge of Adult Service
Programming. Despite the challenges presented by a major renovation to our Senior Site
in Eagle, Adult Services was able to provide 72 pilates/yoga/stretching class units of
services in the first five months of2006. The total service units for 2006 is projected to
be 204. That represents a 24% increase in service from 2005. The active minds series is
scheduled to begin in July 2006.
